If creating your own 3-D models, laser-etched accessories or unique furniture sounds like fun, it’s time to take a trip to Fab Lab El Paso.
Short for fabrication laboratory, there are non-profit Fab Labs across 30 countries that offer communities of various economic backgrounds tools and technologies to invent.
Fab Lab El Paso’s tool set continues to grow, but so far includes devices such as 3-D printers, laser cutters, 3-D scanners and a CNC router, which uses a computer-operated system to cut large sheet material.
Throughout the year, the lab holds workshops and camps that teach the community how to use such tools and come up with their own designs. Earlier this year, the City of El Paso’s Museums and Cultural Affairs Department sponsored the Fab Kids Series in which participants created an interactive music installation.
