On Thursday, non-profit MakerGirl pitstopped at the Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska Camp Catron & Retreat Center in Nebraska City to show 68 Girl Scouts across Nebraska how the 3D printers work and allowed them to get a hands-on experience in the world of 3D printing. MakerGirl was created in October 2014 in a social entrepreneurship class at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and is an organization that is dedicated to inspiring young girls to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.
Nebraska City was one of many stops for MakerGirl during its nationwide mobile tour, which began June 1 in Gordo, Ill., and ends Aug. 3 in Chicago. The goal of the tour is to tackle the issue of gender inequality in STEM fields.
“MakerGirl strives to reduce the gender gap in STEM fields and create a world in which girls live and dream as unstoppable forces that say ‘yes’ to the challenges of the future,” MakerGirl co-founder Lizzy Engele said.
